In Melrose, Massachusetts, gun sights are a part of the town's history. The first set of sight posts were erected in 1798. From these, the first rifles and pistols were used by the militia and hunters in the area. The townspeople soon realized that they needed more sighting devices to keep their firearms in good condition. In 1828, a couple of citizens donated land to build a rifle range on which they could practice with their firearms. This led to the development of target shooting as a popular pastime in Melrose. By 1857, there were three rifle ranges within walking distance of each other in Melrose; one for men only, another for boys and girls between the ages of 6-14 and an organized military range for soldiers and their families. These Range facilities continue to be used today by residents who enjoy practicing with their firearms outside on various propertylands throughout town.

The first gun sights in Melrose were set up by Captain John Winthrop in 1636. The Captain built a simple two-shot brass sight out of a piece of wood and some old nails, which he mounted on the top rail of his cannon. This crude sight allowed him to hit targets at a range of about five or six shots per minute.
Melrose is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 5,753 at the 2010 census. The name may come from the Spanish word "mela" meaning "melted snow," which is what most likely inspired the name for this town because of its frequent winter weather. The first settlers in what is now Melrose were Quakers who arrived in 1692. They built their first house on the current site of Main Street in 1693 and continued to live there until 1847 when they moved to what is now Northampton County. In 1784, three brothers from Boston named Johnathan, Solomon and Ebenezer purchased land that became part of what is now Melrose. They established a mill known as Mill Pond on the stream by their farmstead and began to produce flour which they sold to local farmer communities throughout Worcester County. One of America's earliest post-Revolutionary War patriot leaders, Jonathan Edwards (1708-1784), lived in nearby Westborough until he was banished from Massachusetts after leading an unsuccessful attempt to overthrow British rule there during the Stamp Act crisis (1765). He then moved his family to Melrose where he started a small printing press that published pamphlets supporting independence during the American Revolution. Edwards also developed a successful business importing goods from England including salt and candles. In 1794, George Washington stopped by Melrose on his way home from his military campaign against Great Britain near Saratoga Springs in New York and called it "a very good place". After meeting with General Washington at Mill Pond, Edwards decided to rename it Washington Manor after him – but only if Melrose could get unanimous approval from its citizens. When no one came forward to argue against changing the name – even though many here thought highly of Washington – Edwards proceeded with his plan and changed it back to just Washington Manor after winning passage through both houses of Congress as an act of national self-promotion. During World War I, many people worked forfffthe US war effort contributing their skills and money towards creating munitions plants around Connecticut such as White Sands Ammunition Plant east of Hartford and Manchester Naval Air Station west of Springfield; these plants produced weapons used all over Europe while tens of thousands more Americans served within our country in various ways including active duty military and civilian life
One of the earliest firearms sights was a crossbow sight, which was typically installed on the upper limb in order to aim at an object several hundred yards away. Crossbows were used extensively during the 12th century and early 13th century, and so gun sights became increasingly important over time. By the 15th century, shooting pistols had become popular, and crossbows were no longer as common. Melrose, Massachusetts is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts. The population was 21,914 at the 2010 census. Melrose is one of the oldest towns in Worcester County and has been settled since 1639. It was incorporated as a town on January 1, 1853. The first post office in Melrose was opened in 1792. The town grew rapidly after incorporation and by 1860 it had a population of over 30,000 people. In 1865, the railroad came through Melrose and made it easier to get to the rest of Worcester County; this led to even more growth in the town. By 1920, Melrose had a population of over 50,000 people and by 1930 it had reached 70,000 people again. However, during World War II there were significant reductions in population due to the war effort; however by 1950 the mayor estimated that Melrose's population would be about 75,000 people still living today. The early residents of what is now Melrose were primarily Quakers who worshipped at nearby Northampton Meeting House (now part of Northampton). A large number of these settlers arrived around 1700 when William Bradford founded an English colony at Plymouth Colony which he named "Boston". Many Quaker families moved westward during this time period because they felt that settling near Boston would give them some immunity from religious persecution back home in England. These families eventually built up an impressive community hereabouts and started baptizing new arrivals into their faith so that they too could become part of this great American experiment known as "the New World." Despite its small size at first – only comprising six or seven buildings – within a few years much progress had been made with regards to public services such as schools and churches being established side-by-side along with several stores/courts/libraries/avertissements businesses all catering to surrounding farmers etcetera…Themeloese [sic] gradually became self-reliant sufficient for themselves & their needs until c1800 when additional resources (& growth) arrived via railroads
