Eventually, he took them to a shop on Bridge Street and began selling them outright. During the American Revolution, many people in Melrose sided with the British side and did not have guns. This caused some friction between the local citizens and Fenton who continued to sell his magazines unaffected by the war. After the revolution ended, many new residents moved into Melrose and began arm themselves for protection against Native Americans who still lived in the area. As ammunition became more difficult to find and prices increased,Fenton decided to close his business but kept publishing his magazines until 1840 when he finally died at age 90 years old. Although John Fenton's publications are long gone, their influence can still be seen today in Melrose as some of its early entrepreneurs continue to publish magazines here today!

Melrose is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 9,721 at the 2010 census. It is the largest settlement in Middlesex County and one of the most populous towns in New England. Melrose's history dates back to 1636 when English colonists founded a trading post on the border of present-day Melrose and Randolph Counties. The post was abandoned in 1638 because of Indian attack. A year later, colonists built a small fort on an island in the river near where it now stands to protect their trade with Native Americans. The fort served as both a trading post and military base for several years before being abandoned again in 1646 due to Indian raiders. In 1660, English settlers replaced the French traders at the post with their own people, who named their new community after prominent Puritan minister John Winthrop (1584-1652). The first settler in what is now Melrose was Jonas Alden (1712-1785), who erected a large frame house on Main Street in 1736. He also became one of its first mayors. Other early residents included Increase Mather (baptized April 12, 1713—died December 3, 1796) and Nathaniel Weston (1724-1802). After becoming part of Middlesex County in 1803, Melrose began to grow rapidly; by 1800 its population had reached 1009 people. Its growth continued through Reconstruction and into the 20th century; by 1930 it had increased to 2119 people. During World War II much of Melrose was destroyed by bombing during American Civil War effort targeting German cities; however many buildings still stand today including First Congregational Church which houses a museum about local life during that time period The town has experienced some significant changes over its centuries-changing from primarily agricultural land to modern day commercial center with heavy industry borrowings along side residential development leading up until recently when more recent arrivals have taken up residence elsewhere within town limits including parts of Randolph which are currently known as North Arlington In 1837 courthouse square saw construction begin on what would become Boston Common under then Mayor James Bowdoin Two years later this area would be renamed Forest Hills following purchase from Charles Tilton Most notably Forest Hills Business District took shape around Post Office Square Boston Common Marketplace opened northwest corner of Chestnut Hill Road/Frosty Hollow Rd., Harvard Ave/Keele Rd., Commonwealth Ave/Nashua Rd., Lexington Ave./Hudson St./Merrill Ln., Washington Blvd./Everett St.– Today’s Perry Plaza off main square – This would become home to various businesses such as Sears & Roebuck department stores while Forest Hills Marketplace continued operations mostly out front across Shawmut Ave east past current day Green Line tracks servingize largely office space and light industrial usesToday’s mixed use district offers some retail options though very few residences

It is also well known for its annual Pumpkin Festival which draws thousands of visitors each year!
Melrose was founded in 1764 by Increase Mather, the founder of Harvard University. The town was named for the fruit trees that grew near the original location of the settlement.
