Melrose is a small town in the town of Quincy, Massachusetts. The population was 1,844 at the 2010 census. It is located in the southeastern corner of Quincy County and forms part of the Boston metropolitan area. The name most likely comes from two early immigrants, Moses and Rebecca Morse, who arrived in 1796. They named their farm "Moses," after their father's brother Moses who had come over with his family from Arabia about 16 years earlier. The land where Melrose now stands was first settled by Indians in the late 1600s. In 1812, John Eliot founded Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts and gave money to have a road built to connect that city with Melrose so students could get to school quickly and avoid long walks back home. In 1825, when the United States acquired Mexico's southern borderland, Melrose became part of what would become Mexican Texas because it lay on both sides of I-10 which then divided Mexicali into Mexican Federal Districts (which included Boston) while Texas was still part of Mexico. This increased immigration pressure on Quincy residents for space so much so that some began to build up fences around their property as early as 1827; one resident even built a watchtower to observation point! On July 4th, 1830 – Independence Day – an Anglo-American mob stormed into the rectory of Emmanuel Baptist Church and burned down all but three buildings including its steeple; this event is generally considered to be when Melrose got its present name (after Samuel Morse). Reverend Obadiah Morse moved his congregation from Revere to Milton towards Middlesex County where they were eventually able to rebuild on larger plots there before moving back out into town again in 1836 when railroads came through that county andrew grealish/ melrose

Melrose was founded in 1792 by Ezra Cornell and his brother, Samuel. The father of modern Melrose, Rev. John Eliot, preached there in the early 1800s. In 1803, the town voted to become a village. It did so with the help of a group of wealthy farmers who donated land for the village. The first post office opened in 1809. By 1825, Melrose had a population of 1,500 people and had started an agricultural economy based on raising livestock, grinding flour from wheat fields, and selling eggs and butter from their homes. However, during the American Civil War (1861-1865), much of Melrose was destroyed by Union artillery fire as Confederate forces fought for control of Boston Heights on neighboring Charlestown Day (May 29th). In 1865, after four years of Reconstruction following the war's end, Boston annexed Melrose as part of its new city limits. Although some businesses continued to operate until around 1920 due to lack of competition or changing technology; most local businesses closed down by 1925 due to technological advancements that made production easier and more efficient than ever before. Today only a few small residences remain standing on what once was one of Boston's most vibrant neighborhoods.
