Melrose, Massachusetts is located in the town of Melrose on the border of Worcester and Lexington. The first settler in what is now Melrose was Ebenezer Stevens who arrived in 1785. During the Revolutionary War, many people from other towns in the area fought for America against British troops. One such person was John Adams who served as a privateer off of Cape Cod. After the war, Stevens continued to live in Melrose and started a small farm. In 1824, he sold his farm to Jabez Morse and moved to Springfield where he died in 1851. In 1825, Jabez Morse purchased a tract of land east of present day Melrose from Ebenezer Stevens. He started a small farm there which grew into an important agricultural center during the late 19th century. Morse also played an important role in politics and served as Mayor of Melrose from 1865-1867 and 1870-1872. After his death, his son Amos took over running the farm until it was sold to James Wilson in 1893. The Wilson family continued to run the farm until 1945 when it was donated to the nearby Worcester Polytechnic Institute by their descendant Gordon Mapes Sr., president emeritus of WPI’s Board of Trustees
In 1788, the town of Melrose was incorporated. The first settler in the town was John Dennison, who arrived in 1786. The town had a population of about twenty-five people when it became a village in 1827. In 1835, the village merged with neighboring towns to form the city of Melrose.
