Medford, Massachusetts is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 12,906 at the 2010 census. Many of those who fought there are buried there today in Mount Auburn Cemetery. In 1834, when Middlesex County was created out of portions of neighboring Essex and Suffolk counties, Medford became one of its seven townships; it was split again into two parts in 1851 when Quincy Township became part of Springfield Township. From 1892 until 1975, all but five years were tumultuous years for Medford as its downtown businesses went through bankruptcy or closure due to prohibitionist efforts by a group led by banker Sidney Sheldon; these difficulties have been resolved over time with donations from business owners and government support programs like economic development assistance. The first European settlers in Medford were Peterborough Quakers who established a trading post on May 5, 1636, during the height of the New England Pequot War. The town was organized as a village on December 12, 1801 by order of General James Ketchum and was named after Medford Township in Pennsylvania where his father had been born. On February 8, 1825, it became one of the townships formed from parts of West Bridgewater and North Reading. The first store opened in Medford on November 3rd. On July 6th 1890, when Worcester County became part of Massachusetts due to its merger with Hampshire County (then Middlesex), Medford voted to become an incorporated city and was re-incorporated as such on January 1st 1902 by proclamation from Governor Levi P. Morton (). On October 14th 1912 local residents successfully petitioned for statehood which led to their incorporation into Massachusetts as a city under article V of the US Constitution (). On April 15th 1916 Mayor Abram Jaffe announced that City Hall would be replaced within two years with a new building designed by McKim & Mead Associates Architects (now Remodelers Warehouse Company) and dedicated on October 1st 1921 In 1924 Edward Condon opened what is now known as "Condon's" famous seafood restaurant located at 126 Main Street in downtown Medford just northeast of Central Square A fire destroyed most of downtown Medford on September 10th 1928 leaving only Condon's restaurant standing which reopened five weeks later after rehabilitation project costing $250K . In 1951 defaulted bonds forced closure which caused many businesses including Condon's to go out of business but it reopened again for another 50 years until defaults again forced closure in 1993 Medford has experienced several waves of immigration over its history: primarily Italian but also Irish and Japanese people have come here since 1800s; more recently Polish and Hispanic families have moved here too. Reflecting this diversity are multiple languages spoken here – English being especially common among immigrants themselves – documenting both social customs and everyday life experiences along with culture shock upon arrival . Many ethnic food items found throughout different parts of America are also popularized or starting off locally here like pierogi from Poland or buffalo chicken dip from Texas .
