Medford, Massachusetts is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 10,693 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Middlesex County. The name Medford comes from Old Englishmeaning "place of meetings". The town was founded by Puritan settlers in 1636 and was named for Medfordshire in England. In 1786, it became part of Worcester County and then Middlesex County when that county was created. The townsite changed hands several times before settling on its current location in 1837. Medford has a rich history dating back to the days of its settlement as a small farming village on the banks of the Mystic River. Its first permanent settler was Nicholas Prentiss, who arrived in 1636 and built his home where present-day Interstate 95 meets Route 2A (the main road through Medford). He named his new community after his home county - England's Medfordshire - which he had visited there during his travels up and down New England's East Coast。 Prentiss soon developed a thriving commerce with neighboring communities along the river; goods transported by water were among the first to be sold within town limits. In 1646–1701, John Eliot served as representative from Medford to the General Court of Massachusetts Bay (now Rhode Island). Afterward, he returned to live among his friends and continue trading with local residents until his death in 1700.. In 1786, when Worcester County became part of Massachusetts, Medford followed suit – becoming one of its first towns. A school opened in 1837 after voters approved $5 per year for public education but it closed within five years due to lack of funding.. In 1875-76 school trustees built a new brick building which still stands today on Central Avenue east of downtown; this structure served as both the town hall and high school until 1965 when it burned down.. By 1860-61 there were only six people living inmedford proper while over 20 people lived en route via countryside settlements such as North Hadley and Woburn…only 1/3rds [of] all grain crops grown were consumed within town limits…In 1901 only 3% (of) all manufactured products produced in Middlesex County came from Medfield….Today’s economy is largely based on services provided by businesses located outside town limits including: medical servicesitalsand ambulancesand dentists…..Many residents commute into larger cities for work opportunities……The population peaked at 11,827 individuals according to 1930 census estimates but has now declined below 9300 since then………………Today’s median household income is almost identical to that reported for ZIP code 01060 ($72k)….Medfield functions more like an outlier than most American towns because many services are not available or very expensive inside citylimits
