In 1837, a group of merchants led by Ebenezer Strong organized what would become known as "The First Congregational Church" (later called First Unitarian Universalist Church) on North Main Street between Watertown Avenue and Everett Road. At first services were conducted orally using an antlers pillow for communion because no paper reeds could be found to make communion cups. Reverend Amos Kendall officiated at these services until 1840 when he moved to Chicopee Falls to become pastor of nearby Holyoke church (now Holyoke University). Reverend Kendall's successor was Rev.[? Father] John Hickey who served from 1840-1851 before moving back to Medford where he founded The Sunday School Journal (later The Christian Herald). From 1870-1974 all services were held at Trinity Episcopal Church located across Constitution Avenue from downtown Medford - except for Advent/Christmas service which took place at Hope Chapel located south side Maple Street next door to PhillipsBank where Reverend Calvin Coolidge officiated from 1974-1978.. Prior to this time service operations took place inside Gleevecown PresbyterianChurch which opened its doors in 1903 adjacent to Emerson College (now Emerson University). An outdoor stage was erected opposite Gleevecown PresbyterianChurch soon after its opening allowing performances by local artists such as Harry Chapin and Woody Guthrie during winter months..
