Medford, Massachusetts was founded on December 5, 1795 by Nathaniel Hawthorne and John Adams. The town was named for the Medway River which flows through it. Hawthorne had been a resident of Concord, New Hampshire andAdams was from Worcester, Massachusetts. The town’s first store opened in 1802. On February 12, 1824, Medford became the capital of Massachusetts after Boston was re-established as the state’s capital following the end of the American Revolution.
