In 1828, Medford became the capital of Massachusetts when then-Governor John Quincy Adams chose it as the state's new seat for government. The city grew rapidly during its early years; by 1830, it had outgrown its original boundaries and became a district comprising all of modern-day Medford and part of Springfield. In 1848, following America's admission into the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Medford responded with plans to create an international climate center within its boundaries. This ambitious project proved highly successful; over the ensuing decades,Medford developed into one of the leading proponents of renewable energy development in Massachusetts Bay Area (MBA). In recent years, various efforts have been made to revitalize downtownMedford; these have included restoration work on historic buildings and streetscapes as well as development projects focused on creating more pedestrian-friendly neighborhoods inside or adjacent to downtownMountain View Parkand within walking distance of most major city amenities
