Medford, Massachusetts is a town in Andover, Massachusetts, United States. It is the older of two towns in Andover and was founded by Increase Mather on May 10th, 1692. The population was 7,642 at the 2010 census. The name Medford comes from the word "mede" meaning "place where goods are bought." The first settler in what is now Medford was John Walden who arrived with his family in 1693. He traded wood and other goods with the Indians and built a cabin on the side of a hill near what is now Main Street. Increased traffic caused Walden to build an even larger cabin on State Road 21 near today's Old High School. In 1727 Samuel Adams moved his family to Medford from Northampton County, Pennsylvania and began to cultivate land there. He named his farm for his friend Francis Wayland (1675-1737), one of the leading men of Salem during this time period. In 1729 Wayland donated all of Medford Creek to Boston College which then gave it its present name - Harvard University - also giving rise to nearby Needham Heights as well as much development around campus over time including Fenway Park and MIT's Sanders Library Building located on Cambridge Avenue today. In 1824 Moses Brownlow purchased some 640 acres along the Mystic River from Nicholas Goodrich for $2 million dollars which he used for farming purposes until 1871 when he sold it all to Frederick Law Olmsted Jr., founder of New York City's Central Park District fame for $32 million dollars making him one of America's richest landowners ever. This made him one of only four people ever to have owned more than half a country (Uzbekistan being another). The town of Medford, Massachusetts was first settled in 1630. The town was named for the spring that flowed near the present-day site of Medford. The first settlers in Medford were English Puritans who arrived in 1630 and built their homes on a hill overlooking the current site of the town. The town grew quickly and by 1700 it had a population of about 100 people. In 1718, the Britishtown of Lexington was founded nearby and soon became a rival to Medford as the center of colonial Boston. However, Medford continued to grow and by 1800 it had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1825, Medford became part of Worcester County and later Middlesex County.
