In 1868, after three decades of growth under Mayor Arthur Butterfield (1829-1907), Medford attained city status and began expanding rapidly southward along Route 9 to include all but two blocks of Center Street between Lexington Avenue and Quincy Street; this addition greatly enlarged thetown center which still occupies much of today's downtown area although much effort has been made to preserve some historic buildings including several large public works institutions like Harvard University’s School of Engineering and Technology which are located just east across Quincy Street from City Hall Plaza where the original meeting house (1636) once stood In 1916 Mayor James Hynes created a new borough comprising parts of both cities while retaining control over Town Meeting meetings until finally giving it up to residents in 1951 ; since then each borough has had complete autonomy over its own affairs with no connection whatsoever with either city limits

The name "Medford" is first mentioned in 1636 as Medforde; it derives from the word "middangere" meaningmiddle or middle-of-the-road and "ford" meaning stream. The original settlement was on the east bank of the Mystic River, on what is now School Street. The first permanent European settlers were two brothers named John and Samuel Adams who arrived in 1636 from England with their families. They founded a trading post near modern day Harvard University and named it Medford after one of their home towns in England. One of the early residents was Nathanieliblical Coburn who immigrated to Medford from Connecticut in 1639 and became one of the leading merchants and political officials in town. In 1737, Benjamin Franklin moved to Medford fromBoston with his family and began work as a printer for Philip Cartwright. In 1821, voters passed an ordinance establishing a town government under which commerce would be conducted through a board of selectmen headed by an elected chairman who would make all decisions related to building projects and elections; town meetings were also held annually to approve minutes of previous meetings On July 6th 1830, John Quincy Adams (1809 – 1847) was born here while he lived at 7 Beacon Hill which then became his boyhood home until he moved into Congress House later that year . On December 12th 1830 , during Adams Presidency (1848 – 1857), his house burned down but he quickly rebuilt it using Federal funds . Many Presidents have resided here including Ulysses S Grant (1865 – 1893) Calvin Coolidge (1927 – 1929) Franklin D Roosevelt (1933 – 1945), Harry Truman (1945 - 1953). President Eisenhower had his presidential library built here in 1957
