Medford, Massachusetts is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 11,856 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. In 1641, the Dutchman Johannes Pottegaert founded a small village on the Medford River near modern-day Medford and its sister town of Woburn. The first store in Medford opened in 1771. The townsite was given to Worcester by Resolution of the General Court on July 1, 1825 as part of a land swap with Woburn following the Boston Purchase of 1803. In 1854, Medford became one of eight towns in Worcester County that were merged into the new Commonwealth of Massachusetts as part of an effort to improve transportation and communication within New England. The merger was controversial because it resulted in most residents staying within their own communities while large numbers moved to Worcester County for jobs and housing opportunities. As one result of annexing Arlington Heights (1905), Belmont (1912), Webster (1914) and other smaller villages during World War I,Medford had a population totaling 2700 by 1917 when all but two had been annexed back into Worcester County except Belmont which remained municipally independent until 1925 when it too became part of Worcester county proper under state jurisdiction du jour. A second wave annexation took place from 1933 through 1942 with Addison (1934), Brookline (1935), Malden (1936), Newton Lexington Park (1945) and Northborough (1950). During this period many homes were purchased for use as military barracks or for resettlement during World War II including Walpole Harbor Naval Air Station located just northwest of town limits serving portions of Rhode Island until 1945; Fort Myer Army post located immediately southwestof town limits from 1941-1945; and Sudbury Air Depot located eastof town limits from 1944-1945 which served both American troops stationed there during World War II as well as later Allied air forces operating out Oftown primarily at Norwood MA until its closure in 1957 . Today only Arlington Heights remains annexedback to Worcester COUNTY while Webster has become a city .
