It is part of the Boston-Worcester-Fenway Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Medford" comes from an Indian word meaning "fit forMEDFORD". The first settler in Medford was Captain John Winthrop, who claimed land in 1636 and built a house on North Point about what is now downtown Medford. In 1797, Nathaniel Parker Jr., one of the leading patriots during the American Revolution, moved to Medford from Worcester and became its first postmaster. In 1814, Jesse Willard founded a farm near what is now South medford street and built a home there which still stands today. He was followed by his brother Samuel who began to cultivate fields along West Street between Brunswick and Everett Streets in 1825. farming became profitable so they started to build houses around this time also.. In 1773 the townshippping company (later called the Medford Company) bought all of land east of Harvard Avenue and south of Market Street from Francis Wayland for $1,000 cash and 1/4 share of each crop produced on that land for 10 years; this made Medford one of the most important towns in New England during its early years. In 1812 an act providing for a census authorized 11 wards within Boston and these were divided into 2 precincts with precincts being named after British generals: North Ward (founded by Nathaniel Beale), which included Allston and Northampton; East Ward (founded by William Prescott), which included Cambridge, Quincy, Somerville, and parts of Brookline; WestWard (founded by Jabez Cuyler), which included Watertown and Everett
