It is the most populous municipality in Middlesex County and the second-most populous municipality in New England after Boston. The town became a village in 1893. Medford's history goes back to 1635 when John Winthrop founded the first permanent English settlement on what is now Medford Neck Road. The town was officially incorporated on February 14, 1847 by order of Governor Simon Bradstreet. In 1863, during American Civil War II, Medford joined forces with Worcester and other towns to form the Worcester-Medford Union Brigade under General George Meade. On July 4 of that year, Medford's militia detachment participated in an attack on Confederate forces near Northampton Junction (now part of Worcester). The town has been instrumental in its growth as an agricultural center since it was settled; its largest employer has been Westinghouse Electric Company since 1948. Many large businesses have been located here such as Sears Roebuck & Co., Jamba Juice Company and Dunkin' Donuts Corporation which all relocated from or opened new stores within a few miles of each other shortly after moving into their current buildings there; this migration helped create one of America's most dense concentrations of small businesses. The median income for Medford residents is above $60k which puts it well below average but still higher than many towns nearby (Upper Arlington cum Bridgewater median income is only $42k). The name comes from Anglo-Saxon Meedan "meadow" and frende "friend." The first permanent settler in Medford was Nicholas Raynes, who arrived in 1723. He built a cabin on what is now Main Street. The town's first school was opened in 1775 by Rev. John Eliot. The current town hall building was built in 1872 and has been used as a library since 1984. In 1881, Medford became one of the towns within the new Worcester metropolitan area; it continues to be part of that region today. In 1830, Nathaniel Parker founded Parkersville, adjacent to Medford on New Salem Road (now Route 128). Parker died within weeks of his initial settlement and no successor could be found so he was buried near where his cabin now stands. A marker marking his grave still stands today next to Highway 128 south of Medford Center Mall
