Medford is a town in Massachusetts, United States. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. It is located on the south shore of Boston Harbor and has a total area of 18.5 square miles (45 km²). The town's surface water supply comes from the Medford Reservoir, which also provides drinking water to nearby towns and villages. The first Europeans to see what appears to be an Indian village on the south shore of Boston Harbor were sailors who sailed past Cape Cod during their 1620 voyage around Cape Horn. On July 26, 1624, John Winthrop wrote about seeing "a great number" of people living in lodges near the mouth of Narragansett Bay and thought they must be those friendly Indians he had noted earlier that year. It wasn't until 1770 when Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote about his experience as a boy picking cranberries off the beach at West Point Pond where he later grew up, that he realized there were actually Native Americans present in Medford before then. In 1776, during the Revolutionary War, General George Washington's army passed through Medford on its way to battle Bunker Hill. Sergeantmajor Samuel Adams came across a small detachment of British troops quartered at Hingham House while serving as an aide-de-camp to General George Washington and convinced them to march back home after they saw more than 20 American soldiers dead or wounded on Commonwealth Avenue in front of their barracks. The town was founded by Puritan settlers in 1777 when they moved from Ipswich into what is now Downtown Medford for religious reasons following their conversion from Anglicanism to Quakerism in 1650s. This name change didn't take place until 1795 because it sounded too much like London where many Puritans had been born since beginning English settlements along Massachusettes' East Coast some 350 years earlier! In 1803, part of Lawrence County was detached from Worcester County and became known as Middlesex County; this left Medford with just Worcester County Employees Borough (later Arlington) within its boundaries! In 1906, following annexation byBoston proper due to population growth within that city limits – not exceeding 2% per year – Middlesex annexed Arlington again making it one municipality rather than two separate ones! By 1920 Middlesex had annexed all but three out of eight towns within its borders: North Adams (1902), Southwick (1907), Andover (1910), Belmont (1920). At this time there were over 50 municipalities in Massachusetts! Most recentlyMedford lost all but one penny from property taxes collected between 2006-2009!!!
