Marlborough, Massachusetts is a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 7,854 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The town was first settled in 1630 by Puritan settlers from England who named it after John Marlborough, 1st Earl of Marlborough. In 1714, a smallpox pandemic caused an epidemic that destroyed most of Plymouth Colony; however, Marlborough remained unharmed and its original name continued to be used for the present day. In 1803, the town voted to become a separate village and was renamed Quincy. Quincy annexed parts of neighboring towns such as North Attleboro and South Attleboro in 1836-37 to form what is now Quincy Township. On February 12th 1871, the Town of Quincy merged with nearby Attleboro Township to form what is now Marlborough township. In 1898/99 during construction on Route 128 (now Route 128 speeding) a large rock fell from an unused hill onto roadbed near where the interchange now stands killing one worker and injuring more than 20 others; this led to much public outcry against highway construction which continues even today
In 1624, the English colony of Massachusetts Bay was founded by Puritans. The first settlers were Congregationalists, but soon began to convert to Anglicanism. In 1630, the town of Marlborough was established on the east side of the river Merrimac and it became an important port for goods coming from Narragansett Bay. In 1635, a group of investors led by John Winthrop took over management of Marlborough and made it an independent community. The town grew rapidly and by 1640 had a population of about 350 people. By 1700, Marlborough had become one of the most famous towns in New England.
