Marlborough, Massachusetts is a town in Hampshire County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 5,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. Marlborough got its start in 1624 as a small village on the east side of Harvard College (now University) campus. The first permanent settler was Captain John Smith who arrived in 1627 and settled near what is now Marlborough Center. A year later, he built a house on present-day Westminster Street which served as the first public school in the village. In 1630, when Harvard moved to its current location on Beacon Hill, Marlborough became part of the new college town and developed around it with such commercial activity as fisheries and brewing that it has been called "the most prospering township in this colony." The early colonial era saw significant growth for Marlborough with both positive and negative aspects. On one hand were increased opportunities for economic development due to colleges located nearby and increasing trade with other colonies; however, this also led to social unrest due to discrepancies between wealthy landowners and poor laborers – leading eventually to large numbers of refugees settling in the township during the Revolutionary War period. At times during this time period there was great tension between these two groups over land grabs and control of natural resources like timber or fish stocks; however overall life lived peacefully until 1775 when Boston's independence from Great Britain marked a turning point for many townships across New England. After that date things began to unravel rapidly as power struggles ensued between various factions vying for control of newly acquired lands while businesses closed down or relocated away from Patriots areas because of taxes they had to pay (a practice known today as opulence tax).
