Marlborough was first settled by English colonists in 1635 and became a town on November 1, 1736. On July 15, 1777, during the American Revolution, Marlborough's militia fought against British troops under General George Washington near Ipswich. On December 12th 1801,[1] after years of struggle by the community to gain incorporation as a town due to its size and lack of development outside of farming and fishing activities it was granted an Act of incorporation by General Court on January 8th 1802 with a population of about 240 people. The original land for Marlborough consisted of what is now downtown as well as parts of present day Hyde Park and Forsythia areas east of Market Street which are now part of Quincy. The first meeting for selectmen took place on March 9th 1802 with Samuel Morse serving as Moderator and Ebenezer Howard (later Governor) presiding over the meeting[2]. At that time there were only 7 residents living in what is now downtown; 5 men (Samuel Morse, Ebenezer Howard, John Putnam [3], Amos Eaton), one woman (Hannah Farrand) and their infant child.[4] Incorporation papers show that the towns meeting house “hath been erected at Charlestown about four miles from this Place”[5] but no further information can be found about it or when it might have been built. In 1814 Jabez Burrows donated land south from Market Street between First and Second Streets which would become today's Hyde Park area[6]. This donation helped create Lafayette Square which still stands today across from South Station in Boston

The town's growth slowed during the 18th century but resumed after America achieved independence in 1783. During World War II Marlborough became an all-black military housing community for African American soldiers serving in the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy; its black inhabitants are often referred to as "Marlborough Little Americans". After the wars ended, Marlborough experienced a rapid increase in population due to new suburban development and industrialization within commuting distance of downtown; however, this has now tapered off and most residents live within their own communities or villages today. Today Marlborough is home to a variety of businesses including several high-end retailers such as Macy's, Sears and JCPenney; a small number of restaurants including one served exclusively by organic vegetables; two libraries; two churches (Anglican and Methodist); three schools (grades K-12), one vocational school (MITvet) and one college (Boston University).
