The first permanent European settlers in Marlborough were the Hollanders who arrived in 1636. A school and meeting house were built in 1639. The Dutchtown Post Office was established in 1701, and the town was renamed Marlborough after the county seat of Plymouth County. In 1814, Captain John Fennimore Cooper founded the first cotton gin on Long Island in what is now Farmingdale. In 1827, Marlborough became part of Massachusetts as a result of the Compromise of 1850 which gave New England states their current boundaries. A post office called "Marlborough" had been established in 1701 by order of King George II with designs to serve as an interchange between Easthampton and Salem counties; it was discontinued operation on December 12, 1702 due to its distance from both cities. On April 7, 1800, Marlborough acquired land from Peter Minot for $5 per acre (the minotaurs' share being 1/4 shares). This grant made Marlborough one of the largest townships within Plymouth County when it was organized on April 3 that year pursuant to General Laws Abolition Act (1 Mass.). On October 24, 1821, by act of Congress under title 8 USCS § 634 (20 Linn.), all towns within Plymouth County excepting Exeter were consolidated into one new township -Marlboro Township - named for Colonel Nathaniel Hawthorne (1753-1832), founder and first President of Harvard University and a delegate to both Continental Congresses where he sat as an unelected member from Rhode Island but also served as Mayor and Selectman for Providence Plantations during its early years while Providence City formed around it). The merger resulted in creation of what is now Deptford Township along with several other smaller townships throughout northwestern Massachusetts including Westford Township which merged into Charlestown Borough on July 1st 2006 following a vote by residents there about creating their own municipality separate from Charlestown – this action followed similar votes by Exeter Township trustees about forming an independent municipality separate from Plymouth) – but without any change to town boundaries or services provided thereto such as water or sewerage service etc., since these functions were still carried out jointly by both municipalities until consolidation occurred. With this action effectively removing any remaining vestiges of local autonomy locally detectable since Confederation those same functions finally passed completely under state jurisdiction onto newly created Marlborough Township whose elected officials currently administer all municipal services including water & sewerage provision through public works crews while also maintaining full council representation & power over taxation asphalt paving sidewalk construction streetlights golf courses water towers
