There is a long and varied history of rifle stocks in Marlborough, Massachusetts. Rifle stocks have been used for hunting, self-defense, and military purposes for over 200 years. The first rifles were built in the town of Marlborough in 1798. Rifle companies were organized soon after and began to hunt game in the surrounding area. In 1802, the town of Marlborough ceded its right to use the River Quincey to fishing privileges to Worcester County. This led to the establishment of a rifle company based out of Worcester County in 1805. In 1814, rifle companies were organized throughout New England as part of an effort by General John A. Macdonald to suppress Indian hostilities. The units served under different commanders until 1818 when they were consolidated into one regiment under Colonel Nathaniel Parker Morton. From 1818-1842, rifle companies served with distinction during the Mexican War and American Civil War (Confederate). After the war ended, many veterans returned home and formed new rifle companies in order to resume their old activities from when they left service. One such company was called “The Pioneer” which was founded on October 4th, 1865 by Enoch Pratt who had fought with distinction during the Civil War (Union). Marlborough is a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The name "Marlborough" comes from Marlowe's play, "The Massacre at Verona." Marlborough began as a small settlement on the east side of Plymouth Pond in 1724 by Captain John Marlowe and his wife Anne Hill. They named their new town after Marlowsford near Oxford in England where they had been born and raised. The first settler was Dutchman Hendrick de Vries who came to Marlborough in 1725 with his family. On December 14, 1726, Lt.-Governor Samuel Adams granted land to Colonel Nicholas Bourne for Negroes transportation to new settlements west of New England. This included the present-day town of Marlborough. In 1757, Lieutenant Governor John Winthrop ordered all male citizens over 21 years old to attend a public meeting to discuss founding townships within Plymouth County for distribution among the families of those who had served in this colony during its early years. At this meeting it was decided that Marlborough should be one of these townships and it was organized on February 13th, 1758 under the name "Marlborough Plantation". When General George Washington moved his Headquarters from Cambridge to Newport on Cape Cod in spring of 1777 he recommended that all troops quartered there move into houses built for them at least two miles from military barracks so that they could be supplied with fresh air and exercise without fear of attack or theft by the local Indian tribes living along our coast then numbering about 3500 men being led by Chief Pontiac (the Massachusett chief). So when we heard that General Howe had landed at Falmouth on Martha’s Vineyard we knew right away some mischief would happen hereabouts as we could see plenty more British troops than Indians around…. By May 7th when our troops were moving out there were only 1100 men left behind at Falmouth but soon afterwards news arrived thru Major Bradford that 350 more American Rangers had joined him….. We mustered out here on May 12th 1800 having served 5 years…. After our discharge I took my family home across Mill River between Ipswich and Attleboro…I started homesteading about 3/4 mile south eastward from where I now stand direct line up with what is now Dartmouth Rd.,East Ave (now Middleton Rd.) & North Ave (now Arlington St.). Here I erected my first house which still stands today: A large 2 story white log building located just east off Middleton Rd./Arlington St., across from where Dragoons Sports Club now stands….. From here until 1814 I lived alone except for occasional visitors who would come visit me during thier stays…. From 1814 until 1822 I resided with my son George which gave me 4 acres next door to my house….. In 1822 George moved out West also so my daughter Nancy & her husband Thomas Green took over caretaking things here until 1840…….. Finally since 1840 Nancy has resided here with her son Daniel ever since………….. Nowadays you can find people living permanently or transiently throughout most or all parts of your village including one farmstead dating back to 1640 still standing……………..After giving us an excellent view right down into Dartmouthport [sic] (& several good ones looking out onto both sides of Blackwater Bay) Capt.(later Maj.-Gen.) James Fentonpoole spent manyhours each day atop Pemaquid Hill looking out over everything Portsmouth Harbor etc.—A very fine site indeed!—Mar-Apr 2009 Captain James Fentonpoole commanded British forces during America's War for Independence; he became known as "The Patriot King" because he fought against British forces almost nonstop from late summer through winter1775-176

The town's economy was based on agriculture and fishing until the mid-19th century when textile production took hold. By 1925, Marlborough had a population of over 10,000 people and was one of the most populous towns in New England. The town experienced rapid growth during World War II as many locals volunteered to serve in the military. After the war, Marlborough experienced a period of decline which ended in the late 1960s when it began to experience significant gentrification.
