The town is named after John Marlborough, 1st Viscount Monmouth and an English nobleman who served as Secretary to King George II from 1714 to 1716 and as ambassador to France from 1723 to 1725. The current site of Marlborough was first settled by the Native Americans in 1524 as part of the Wampanoag Confederacy. In 1694 it passed under British control due to its strategic location on theNECTICUT River near Narragansett Bay. The town's first school was built in 1695 by Reverend Nathaniel Morton and Classes were held in a room over a store house. When the local militia was disbanded during King George III's American Revolution, Marlborough school continued operation until 1803 when it merged with Plymouth Congregational Church which had been founded in 1693. In 1868 Marlborough became an incorporated village and still exists as such today In 1860s there were two textile mills that produced cloth for export: One operated by Samuel Slater located on Meeting Street (now School Street) while another ran by Alfred Weare on White Road just south of Presentation Square Today only one mill remains - that run by Medford Textile Company Incorporated which opened its doors on Main Street in 1922 Marlborough also has several small businesses including four grocery stores; two bank branches; two convenience stores; three beauty salons; six auto body shops; three radio stations (WGBH-FM, WCVB-AM/FM, WRKO-CW) along with many other services providing jobs for locals and visitors alike

The first permanent English settlement in what became Marlborough was made on White Sands Pond in 1634 by John Winthrop and his company of Pilgrims. In 1635, the town's name was changed to Marlborough after the Earl of Marlborough who had fought for England in the English Civil War (1642-1651). In 1737, a group of English colonists led by Captain Richard Gridley founded the independent colony of Danvers on Swampscott River near modern-day Quincy. In 1740 also came another group under Governor John Adams established as Concord on Haverhill Bay about eight miles west of present-day Marlborough. These two colonies were soon joined and began to trade with each other and develop their own economy. During these early days in America there was no such thing as an educational system like that we have today where students go through an institution like college or university and then they can go out into society and work or study to get a better paying job. Instead those early colonists gathered together and formed their own schools which were called "Schools for Advancement" because they wanted their children to be able to go into the world ready-made rather than having to learn everything themselves from scratch. This type of education wasn't available back then so these Schools for Advancement provided instruction in reading, writing, arithmetic, geometry etc., until such time as someone could obtain a good degree himself or herself outside of school. It wasn't until much later when Reverend Benjamin Franklin opened up Griggs Collegiate School which became one of America's leading universities providing education from Kindergarten through Twelve Years old inclusive! Today Grigg's continues educating young minds with stateoftheart programs while still maintain its connection to Reverend Franklin who helped establish it all along!
