Marlborough, Massachusetts is a town in Hampshire County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census and 2,047 as of the 2013 estimate. It is part of the Springfield–New Bedford metropolitan area. The first permanent European settlement in Marlborough was founded by Captain John Smith in 1624 on an island in Newburyport Harbor. At first known as "Portsmouth" because it lay on the Portsmouth River between Ipswich and Salem, Massachusetts (then part of Boston), Marlborough began to be called "Marlborough" after its patron saint, SaintMartha Parishioner (1563-1626). In 1692 a group of English colonists led by Samuel Adams came to Marlborough from Rhode Island to found their own parish church there. The first use of firearms in America took place here when Capt. John Smith fired two shots into the air on July 24th in what became known as "the Battle of Bunker Hill." On December 14th 1775 an American force under General George Washington attacked British forces entrenched at Saratoga Springs within rifle range of Northampton village; this event is also historically celebrated with a day off from work each year named Washington's Birthday. The town received its charter from King George II on November 15th 1786 and retains that status today. In 1807 Governor Elbridge Gerry ordered the construction of Fort Frederick which served as one element in his efforts to secure Yankee independence during the War for Independence. After years of planning and construction only including men who could either fight or labor (i.e., not settlers) Fort Frederick finally opened its doors to visitors on October 24th 1814 after more than three years' hard work – but was quickly captured by British troops just outside Boston before they could even disembark! As tensions mounted between America and Great Britain over control of key maritime resources such as fisheries and trade shipping near Kingston Upon Thames in southern England, Sir Henry Clinton sent Commodore James Cook with HMS Bounty - commanded by First Lieutenant William Bligh - deep sea explorer searching for Spanish treasure fleets off Cape Horn while simultaneously trying to intimidate American traders into joining him instead – only for Cook's shipwrecked crew stranded ashore on Christmas Day 1787 mistaken for receding Spanish vessels Magellan Strait had been discovered! When news spread through Boston that General Gage had successfully evacuated his main army back up along the Atlantic coast months earlier rather than stand against British forces besieging Boston following Saratoga Creek Campaign – Americans immediately mobilized amassing weapons throughout Fall Town proper ready for an all out assault upon Castle Garden if necessary! According to the United States Census Bureau, Marlborough has a total area of , of which is land and (3.5%) is water. The town lies on the eastern border of Middlesex County and borders Worcester County to the east and west. The first European settlers in what would become Marlborough were French traders who arrived in 1639-40 along with some Englishmen seeking new land for their colonies after the wrecking of an English ship off Cape Cod by these same French traders. In 1643, Colonel John Winthrop purchased from François le Courtois 1/2 acre (0.20 km²) of ground where present-day Marlborough stands within what would be future Worcester County; this parcel was bounded by present-day Harvard Avenue on the north, Eliot Street on the east, King's Road on the south and Weymouth Bay on the west. Winthrop named his purchase "Winchester." By 1646 over 200 people had moved into Winchester from various parts of England including Ipswich, Salem and Charlestown as part of a larger move known as New England Plantation Society which aimed to create a more perfect society through agriculture and commerce among colonists from different parts of British North America based upon models established in France during Louis XIV's reign called la NouvelleFrance et ses Colonies=New France and its Colonies (1644). However, this period marked asignificant change for the village as it became home to two churches and a Masonic Lodge before becoming an incorporated municipality in 1903. In 1870 there were only 283 people registered with the government; by 1930 it had grown to 1,711 residents! The early history of Marlborough can be traced back to 1636 when English Puritan settlers arrived seeking religious freedom from King Charles I during his reign of intolerance. A small hamlet called Newbury was established here and quickly became known for its high quality woolen cloth exports which helped support local businesses such as Weymouth Woolen Mills and Salem Textile Company until World War II when production shifted to larger factories abroad due to wartime shortages within England itself. A number of interesting facts about Marlborough include that it is one of only four towns in Massachusetts without ZIP code 01001-01052; furthermore it has never been officially annexed by Boston despite efforts by both city councils over the years; instead it remains separate but adjacent within Hampshire County!
