The first permanent settler or "towner" arrived in early 1651; he was named John Winthrop and his family brought over livestock from New England’s Methuen colony. By early December of that year, twenty eight people had registered with Wouter de Vlaminck as residents of what would eventually become Marlborough Village (later Wellesley). In October thereof, he voted “to erect upon their lote a Congregational meeting house” - evidence that early settlement by Puritans was well underway in this part of New England. Enlarging upon these initial accomplishments within weeks of his arrival – De Vlaminck organized a weekly market which attracted goods from all over the region; he also built two houses (later replaced by three more) within what now constitutes downtown Marlborough Village - indicative of how rapidly things were expanding around here! When Wouter died suddenly on October 26th of that year (1579), only six months after arriving in these shores – his widow Mary inherited much property including some 160 acres along present day Wellesley Avenue southward –thus becoming one of the earliest women to own land contiguous with Boston proper! This woman soon founded another Congregational church inside what today functions as Wellesley Central School –albeit without any public funds being available until after her death! In November 1652/3 alone (!), Thos.[?] Smith came ashore from Ipswich with 350 new pounds sterling worth £2 9s 8d 1/4 shillings sterling (= $5600 U$S) bringing with him news that Providence Plantations had granted an Act for Incorporation into Alderney township… thus further solidifying our location as an incorporated town… In testimony given at said incorporation proceedings John Winthrop reported: “I have traded among them since I came hither” – corroborating our claim to be “nearly Neighbors unto them”! This act helped lay down legal groundwork for future political stability within our boundaries although no such affiliation ever materialized! It should be noted however that this Act did not specifically confer jurisdictional rights over any specific tracts within our current village boundaries!! As such we continue to enjoy many privileges enjoyed by other townsfolk currently residing therein e….g., water access etc.–yet still maintain full jurisdiction ourselves!!! Furthermore records show us voting members even prior to incorporation!!! After numerous elections held throughout various parts of Dorchester County [the province bordering on modern day MA], On May 20th [1657] following passage through both House & Senate ratifying said Act inhabitants met together at White Gable Inn where under Mr Speaker Edward Winslow Esqr Sec[y] made proclamation declaring us duly constituted a Towne or Boroughe aforesaid consistingchieflyofWellesleyAverestedwithMarlboroughVillageoneitherSideandotherparts adjoining whithersoever they may be annexed hereafter agreeable thereto!!!!! At said election Capt[y] Hamilton voted against incorporation tho[u]t others did but he afterwards withdrew himselfe outvoted….. By virtue thereof we became subjects & joined Monmouthshire county!!!!!!!!
