Marlborough, Massachusetts is a town in Hampshire County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 3,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The town was first settled by English colonists in 1630 and it became a part of the Province of Massachusettes on February 14, 1776. On April 12, 1834, Marlborough incorporated as a city and from that time until 1964 it functioned as an unincorporated community within the town limits. On July 1, 1966, Marlborough became one of two towns in Hampshire County to be granted statehood; the other being Plainfield. In 1903 Marlborough voters passed a resolution calling for gun control measures during World War I due to concerns about potential war-time firearms purchases by American citizens without proper background checks. The measure failed but generated some publicity which may have led to future efforts at gun control in Marlborough. In 1914 local farmers formed the "Municipal Farmer's Association" to lobby for increased agricultural production and better distribution of food products through cooperative marketing initiatives with neighboring villages/towns within Hampshire County; this effort eventually led to passage of countywide farm legislation in 1916 that gave greater power to village/town boards over individual farmer's operations (the so-called "municipal government system"). On October 7, 1934 an act legalizing political subdivisions within cities (and thus making Marlborough one) was approved by Massachusetts Governor Coolidge and signed into law by him just days after his inauguration as governor. This event helped solidify municipal incorporation as an accepted practice throughout New England while also establishing how municipalities could interact with each other outside of their city or county boundaries - something which would become increasingly important over time as more suburban development began popping up across New England counties(*).
