In 1792, John Adams moved to Marlborough from Quincy and became its first mayor. In 1814, local farmers organized a meeting to discuss ways to improve their economy and protect their rights as landowners against speculators who were buying up land at low prices. They voted to form a village which would have power over its own finances and governance. On July 14 of that year, the town's first meeting was held with residents voting on laws governing elections and other affairs of village membership. In 1907–08 during World War I Marlborough became one of ninety-six municipalities (along with Arlington Heights and Hyde Park) that formedthe New England Defense League to fight munitions production by Germany. When America entered World War II Marlborough joined forces with other New England towns—Hamden and Milford Haven had already declared themselves war industries—to build up armaments production under government control at what would become known as "The Arsenal". After America's entry into World War II Marlborough's economy slumped as plants closed but there are now several businesses that have thrived thanks to international trade including Maytag Inc., Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corporation and Emerson Electric Corporation
