The first colonists to arrive in what is now Marlborough were those who had come overland from England in 1620 as part of the Pilgrims under Captains John Winthrop and Edward Winslow. They settled on a small island off the coast of Cape Cod and built their first houses there around 1630. The following year they petitioned the General Court for land east of Boston Common, which they received in 1632. In 1633 they erected a meetinghouse and began to fish in Buzzards Bay. In 1635 Captain John Smith sailed upriver from present-day Worcester to meet Governor Francis Wigglesworth on his way back from trading with the Indians at Narragansett Bay and found that Wigglesworth's force numbered about 25 men including 10 horsemen led by Captain Joseph Peake. Smith reported this information to King Philip Monmouth and requested permission to explore farther upstream into New England. On July 20,1635, Monmouth granted this request and ordered Captain John Smith to go ashore with his men at present day Portsmouth Harbor where he left a detachment under Colonel William Bradford (a contemporary of Plymouth Colony's Thomas Young) to explore inland waterways before returning downriver some time later that summer. Captain John Smith returned safely without encountering any enemy forces but with valuable knowledge about the area he had explored which led him eventually to build Providence Plantation near modern-day Quincy, Massachusetts in early January 1636 just south of what is now Marlborough Village center on what was then called Barney's Neck Road across from today's former Boy Scout Troop House Museum adjacent property owned by local developer Edwin Larkin Jr.. TheProvidence Plantation was one of several English plantations established along Long Island Sound during King Philip II’s rule over all New England in order “to plant Englishmen upon our colonies … without molestation” according to an advertisement published by Jameson & Son merchants dated May 12th,1638 “for building a plantation for Mr Richard Raymond….” After years of cultivation and growth on its own soil Providence burst onto world stage when it became homeport for HMS "Windham" during her famous expedition against Massachusettes'Provider dating back To November 1st 1600 while she lay anchored off Lynnhaven Point trying unsuccessfully tow an anchor after being sighted by Dutch navigator Abraham Ortelius who mistook her sails for those of an ordinary merchant ship because he could only see vessels like these when flying above water at high altitude . Although not successful (the Windham Expedition resulted in embarrassed British surrender), her presence helped forge American national identity through maritime exploration/navigation even though it also ruined Dutch commercial interests on Long Island Sound thereby givingPRVFMPR something more tangible than bragging rights
