From this point forward, Marlborough became one of New England's most important towns with its own government and militia troops under the command of its selectmen. On December 12th, 1753, Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote an essay entitled "A Description of some Parts of Long Island Sound" while living as a student at Yale University during the summers between 1802 and 1803. Included within that essay are descriptions of several villages located near present day Dunbarton: Westville (later Eastville), Mamaroneck (later Northampton), East Hampton Beach, Nantucket (then known as Weymouth), Brewsterport (now Brockton), Medford (now Monroe). Hawthorne included also descriptions for what is nowMarlborough Village including its original white house which he said had been built by putnam himself “for the use only of his family” after he had purchased 1/5ths interest in all the land around it from Nicholas Lexington about 15 years earlier for £4 per acre or $640 per square mile!
