The first firearms in Marlborough, Massachusetts were made by local resident Nicholas-Jacques Conte and his brother-in-law John Marsden. About 1775, a group of men from the town of Marblehead began manufacturing their own firearms. The first guns made in Marlborough were pistols and muskets. In 1804, the town voted to have a gunsmith create a rifle barrel for all citizens to use. The rifle barrel was designed by Nicholas-Jacques Conte and named after him, the Nicholas Rifle Barrels Company was founded. In 1836, the company began making shotguns with barrels that were about 50 inches long. From 1840 to 1846, they also produced cannons using smoothbore barrels that reached up to 68 inches in length. By 1880, the company had become known as “Marblehead Gun Barrel & Pump Co” because of its products being sold throughout most of New England and Canada. In 1906, Marblehead Gun Barrels merged with Winchester Repeating Arms Company to form Winchester Firearms Corporation. In 1945, this corporation became part ofCORPUS CHRISTI INC., one of America's largest firearm manufacturers (along with Smith & Wesson). The first European settlers in what would become Marlborough were several families who arrived from England in 1630. They started a small farm and raised chickens. In 1636, Major John Winthrop led an expedition to found and populate the area that would become Marlborough. He named the new land for his friend/advisor George Washington as part of his gift to him on Christmas Day 1776. Marlborough's growth began slowly but steadily over the next few decades as more people moved into the area and businesses opened up. By 1815, there were about 350 residents living in Marlborough proper and another 150 or so scattered around environs including some within walking distance of town center. By 1840, there were 1,500 residents living in what is now Marlborough proper with intermittent settlements located outside its boundaries – making it one of the most rural towns in New England at that time. Most of what remains today of early Marlborough development can be traced back to two factors: its location close to major transportation hubs (Boston and Cambridge) and its strong community spirit which helped spur economic development over time. These days, much of what makes Marlburgh such an appealing place to live comes down to two things: its natural beauty (due largely to its rolling hills), enjoyed by both locals and tourists alike; and its proximity to many top universities (including MIT) which have drawn students from all over New England+="making it one of America's most vibrant college towns." A number of events have helped make Marlburgh a popular tourist destination–the earliest being a fairground called The Meadows which occupied space near present day Meeting House Road and Queenston Avenue before moving across town onto Chapel Street in 1875; followed by successive year round festivals like Pumpkin Patch®, Fall Faire®, Shakespeare Festival®+, Summerfest®+ each held annually throughout fall semester culminating with Mardi Gras® on Easter weekend each year since 1978=".

The town is named after John Marlborough, 1st Viscount Marlborough (1647-1723), a British general and statesman who served as Prime Minister of Great Britain from 1702 to 1705 and as Foreign Secretary from 1707 to 1710. Marlborough was first settled by English colonists in 1634. The town was incorporated as a town on April 20, 1837. On December 12 of that same year, the state legislature passed an act which designated Marlborough as the site for the new State Capitol building. The original Capitol building was destroyed by fire in 1886 and replaced by a larger structure which still stands today.
