In 1836 Lowell entrepreneur George Peabody erected a large mansion on what is now Quincy Street in downtown Marlboro Township. Peabody used it as his headquarters for business operations during his years as president of Yale University and later as governor of Connecticut; he is also credited with helping to create modern American education system. After Peabody's death in 1892, his widow commissioned architect Daniel Burnham to design a new Civic Center complex which would include a library,. A number of other leading businessmen and women participated in building this impressive structure including financier Jock Mahoney and socialite hostsess Alice Paulson & Edith Wharton; however only one wing - containing an art gallery - was completed until 1939 when it was replaced by another wing which still stands today (see photo). Marlboro continued to grow rapidly during World War II due to its strategic location within easy range of Allied forces fighting against Nazi Germany at home and abroad. In 1943 Marlborough became home to two major General Motors plants - Cadillac Assembly Plant #1 on Quincy Street near Market Square vacant since 1929 while GM's Highland Park plant occupied nearby Maple Leaf Lane - both considered world-class manufacturing sites at that time (see photo). The war also saw some significant housing developments such as Beechcroft Estates just east of downtown where several thousand veteran Americans lived priorto US withdrawal from Europe; these properties are still extant today (see photos attached).
