In 1846, Marlborough voters passed a resolution admitting schools for white children only within city limits; this led to rapid growth of black families in the town which until then had been all-white. Today there are over 20% African American residents in Marlborough compared to 8% overall (2010 data). In 1916–1917, an airfield and airship plant were built on what is now Route 128 near Marlborough Center Mall; it served as a major stop on flights between Boston and New York City during World War I. After World War II ended and commercial aviation faded away as passenger demand grew more specialized, the airport closed in 1962 and fell into disrepair until it reopened as Manchester-Boston Regional Airport (MBRA) in 1993. MBRA uses mostly general aviation operations today with some light commuter service flown by regional airlines seasonal through Worcester County Airport (Worcester-Newport News).
