It is the smallest municipality in Plymouth County and the only one with a population of under 10,000. The name "Marlborough" comes from an Indian word meaning "place where there are woods." The first European settlers arrived in 1630 and named the place "Winchester." In 1786, John Marlborough purchased land near present-day Marlborough for $1 million. He founded what would become Marlborough Township. The first post office was established in 1812. In 1814, Stephen Dexter built a sawmill on the south bank of the River Merrimack. This mill became one of the largest in New England and remain so to this day. Dexter also owned a gristmill and a flour mill on North Main Street in present-day Marlborough. The early residents of Marlborough were farmers who grew corn, wheat, potatoes, apples and other vegetables; they also raised horses and cattle. By 1800 there were over 100 households in town and most people had their own home or small farmsteads scattered around the township limits. Some 35 years later some 400 families lived here permanently or for many years after that before moving away again or joining larger settlements elsewhere in Plymouth County due to changing economic conditions or new arrivals such as Irish immigrants during the Great Famine (1845-1849). During World War II many local businesses produced munitions for America's war effort including shipbuilding yards at Ipswich Naval Shipyard on Fall River Road west of town and two machine shops at Manchester Manufacturing Company on South Main Street; these plants closed shortly after hostilities ended but left behind an extensive industrial legacy that still exists today including three large chemical companies as well as several smaller businesses active today withinMarlboroughtownshiplimits alone: Wachusett Papermaking Corporation (now JCPenney), Weaver’s Department Store (later Macy’s) and First National Bank (now TD Ameritrade). It was not until 1990 when efforts began to redevelop all or parts of these defunct businesses into mixed use complexes which have since failed because of low occupancy rates by either commercial tenants or residential developers - leaving much valuable industrial property idle during peacetime while it slowly deteriorated into abandoned wasteland status; this has once again led to concern about future sanitary/hygienic implications arising from long term disrepair with little hope currently available to address them short term given current funding allocations by municipalities

The land that makes up Marlborough was first settled by the Pequot people in 1636. The town's first home was a small cabin near where the current courthouse and police station stand today. In 1793, Marlborough incorporation was granted to Roger Williams, who had led an unsuccessful revolt against English rule in Rhode Island. After Williams' death in 1795, his widow applied for incorporation as well but did not receive approval from the General Court until 1811; this delay may have been due to disagreements over administering a new town without Williams' authorization or because many residents still stuck with using Indian names for their families instead of adopting English surnames after he died. In 1812, during the War of 1812, British forces burned down what is now downtown Marlborough while sackers looted and destroyed homes along Chestnut Street and Market Street; as a result of this event, many local businesses closed down and most residents lost their jobs. As a result of this and other such incidents (including one resulting from a fire that killed three children playing on an open field), many people decided to flee to Canada or elsewhere during the warime when it became clear that American forces would eventually prevail over Britain. As American troops advanced into Canada in 1813-1814 after completing their campaign against Britain, they encountered numerous obstacles along their route including several villages which had already been burned by British troops two years earlier pursuant to orders from General George Washington himself – an event known locally as "the Burning of Bradford." At one point particular units reached within two miles (3 km) of Toronto before being forced back by friendly Canadians who had surrounded them; when news arrived back in America regarding Washington's successful military campaign northward), Congress ordered all supplies carried westward be brought stopped at Buffalo rather than continuing on towards Toronto where they could be used against Americans should they ever cross into America proper again (this order likely came about due to concerns that if supplies were headed east then US forces might end up assisting Canadian rebels besieging Montreal). Despite these difficulties however – including 2 months stranded outside Niagara Falls following clashes with native warriors – American troops managed to force their way past Canadian lines just south of Fort Erie on July 11th 1814 finally reaching Toronto days later despite heavy losses among both sides; here American forces disbanded under orders from Major General John Armstrong who considered them too exhausted for further operations any time soon given present hostilities between Great Britain and America (Armstrong also ordered all soldiers not involved in fighting around Niagara Fallsburned village]).
