Malden is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 15,651 as of the 2010 census. Malden is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The name of the town comes from an Indian word meaning "a harbour" or "peninsula." The first settlers in what is now Malden were Englishmen who came to North America in 1624 and 1625. They named their new land after Sir John Chilton, 1st Baronet (1595-1656), a member of Parliament from Oxfordshire who had come over on the Mayflower and later became one of England's most famous colonists. Malden was originally settled by farmers and fisherman who grew crops and raised livestock until the early 20th century when industry began to grow in importance. Malden has always been a highly developed community with excellent public infrastructure including two hospitals, three schools, a library and several businesses including an ice cream parlor, grocery store, restaurant and gas station. In recent years Malden has become known for its art scene which includes several galleries as well as many annual festivals that attract locals and visitors alike.

Malden is a town in Suffolk County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 14,571 at the 2010 census. Malden is part of the New YorkâNew England metropolitan area. The name of the town came from two families who were among the first to settle there in 1636: Malden and Morse. Malden's first settlement was on an island in what is now Malden Harbor. In 1793, John Adams moved his family from Quincy to Malden after winning election as President of the United States; he lived there until 1828. By 1840, all but 2 percent of Malden's residents were white males over 25 years old; by 1860, only 5 percent were still white Males over 25 years old. In 1892, Jethro Gibbs founded Gibbs Machine Works in what is now called downtown Malden and became one of the largest machine traders in America. He also built many houses in what is now downtown Malden and donated them to the town for use as public housing during World War II. In 1957, when Middlesex County merged with Suffolk County, much of the MalDEN land that had been used for farming since before English Settlement was given to both counties freeofcharge through an act known as "The Bateson Act". This gave rise to many suggestions that MalDEN be renamed "Middlesex" or "Suffolk" (and not just "Malden"). However no decision was made and it reverted back to its original name on July 1st 1970 when Middlesex merged into Suffolk county once again-. Today most people living within a few miles of downtown continue to call themselves residents of either Malden or Sudbury due to their lack of autonomy having become part of our larger community-level governance structures
