From 1830 to 1850s Malden was one of only three towns in Middlesex County not subject to the Morse Act which required local election districts with a fixed number of voters within each ward equalized among all residents regardless of race or sex... In 1856 Captain Nathaniel Hawthorne sold part ownership interest in Malden to his brother Ebenezer Hawthorne who then became its first Mayor... DuringCaptain Nathaniel Hawthorne's tenure 5 streetlights were installed making it one of only 3 towns in Middlesex County without electric lights... By 1902 Malden boasted over 100 businesses with an payroll larger than $10,000 including several banks and insurance companies After Captain Nathaniel Hawthorne's death son Ebenezer Haworth took over management but soon encountered financial difficulties which led him into bankruptcy court where he lost control over most aspects of the town Council including appointing officials and setting taxes... He reformed some aspects but lost further support when Highland Park got incorporation while still under government control near today's Needham Centerline Rd/Wellesley St.... After years during which much effort went into reviving business spirit downtown many things such as artesian wells that once produced water so sweet that merchants would sell pitchers full from house to house began going dry throughout centralMassachusetts due largely to lackback thenof good Samaritan organization called Samaritans Purse that collected donations for those affected by drought
