Malden's history dates back to 1775, when it was part of the Province of Massachusetts Bay. The name "Malden" is from the Mohawk language and means "humble place." In 1836, Malden became a village and in 1851 it became a town. On July 14, 1954, Malden became an incorporated city. The town took its name from John Marchiony, who purchased land in what is now Malden in 1775. He named it after his home district of Ireland – Monaghan – and made it one of the original towns in Middlesex County. In 1800, he sold additional land to other settlers and on December 12th of that year, the first election for mayor took place with John Aiken as mayor; Samuel Morse as selectman; Ebenezer Dodge as constable; Daniel Day as assessor; Isaac Sears as justice of peace; and Nicholas Rowe as surveyor. In 1836, Malden became a village under common law status due to its low population density (1 person per 100 acres). That same year, Congress created a new form of government for Massachusetts called township form of government which allowed villages to become townships if their populations reached 5500 residents or more within five years without changing their charter or by passing an Act Of Parliament approved by the Senate chamber. That change gave impetus to many businesses decisions that would be taken soon after - such as hiring workers out of villages into townships instead because they were available at much lower rates than those being offered within municipalities or even outside Boston proper limits!
