The town's name comes from John Malden who came there from Salisbury, England in 1635 to found a church and farmstead there. In 1811, Malden became part of Harvard University's (now MIT) campus as part of what would be known as "The Village." In 1861, when Norfolk County was created, Malden became one of its eight townships; it remained an incorporated village until 1978 when it became an unincorporated township under Harvard University control. On July 1, 1959, Malden became a city when its then- mayor James Fenton announced that he had plans to annex much of neighboring Riverwest which at that time included Cambridge and Somerville as well as most of Everett and District 8 in Arlington Heights eastward to Wellesley Avenue/Lakeview Circle. On October 20th following a referendum vote conducted by telephone Ballot Board over objections from some residents about annexation (the vote having been called because Fenton had not yet given his final decision on whether or not to annex), Malden incorporation officially took place with 3,023 votes cast for incorporation against 2,617 votes against it being accepted without amendments; thus becoming an official city with full powers to levy taxes and make ordinances subject only to ratification by the voters within six months thereafter through another referendum ballot question asking for such ratification intervention should any errors be made during said process). The original main street running through town center today (Church Street) was once Market Street which ran along both sides of Long Pond until it diverged just north of Church Road junction near present day Wellesley Avenue/Lakeview Circle after crossing Mill Brook rapid stream below present day Middleton Road bridge over Mill brook tidal waves inundated section between current site + old dam site making road impassable even for small cars & prevented access upstream so diverted watercourse resulting in pond name change back to Long Pond effective date Sept 30th 2009 due legal issues surrounding former dam site name changes
