The centerpiece attraction in town these days are two lakes - one artificial (Fenway Lake) created by building work on Waltham Common while still under construction; the other - real (Whiting Pond) - was dug by dredging out part of Lynnhaven River which had been diverted for industrial purposes beneath Malden Boulevard just upstream from where it joins Mass Pike at Fenway Park. Both lakes were opened up last year for swimming, ice skating, fishing, boating and walking/running/biking trails that lead around them (details can be found on their websites). Both lakes have been popular attractions for residents since they were open; many people take advantage of both services during their free time outsideof work hours so that they can get some exercise even during wintertime when access to water outdoors is usually limited or impossible.
