The first permanent English settlement in what is now Malden occurred in 1636 when John Winthrop and his party arrived on horseback from Boston. At that time, there were no towns or villages in Middlesex County and most people lived near the river. In 1723, a group of Puritans who had fled to what is now Worcester decided to settle in what is now Malden because they thought it would be more religious and virtuous than other places they had seen. The first church was built here in 1724 by Reverend Samuel Eliot. The town grew rapidly during the 18th century due to its strategic location as a transportation hub on the south shore of Massachusettes Bay and its close proximity to high-quality white breads and flour for baking bread from scratch. During the American Revolution, Malden sided with England because it was one of the few British colonies that refused to recognize Confederation without Britain’s support. However, after independence was gained, Malden began to prosper as an agricultural center due to its access to marketshare and good soil for farming. After World War II, many businesses moved into town including manufacturer widget companies such as General Electric and IBM; accounting firms such as Arthur Andersen; pharmaceutical manufacturers Novartis Pharmaceuticals (now Roche) and Merck & Co.; medical devices company Medical Devices International; electric power suppliers Con Edison Company; insurance companies GEICO and Allstate Insurance Company; among others. Malden, Massachusetts, is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 22,814 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous municipality in Middlesex County and the seat of Malden District. The first permanent English settlers in what would become Malden were two families from Ipswich who arrived on an all-night sprint on October 10, 1636 under the leadership of Captain John Winthrop. They named their new community after Sir Francis Drake's flagship and initial settlement site—Drake's Isles—which they reached after crossing one of several salt bays that lay between present-day Malden and Ipswich. In 1792, when Boston was founded as a city limits town by order of then-Governor Samuel Adams, Malden voted against incorporation as a city; its citizens did so because they felt that it would separate them from their wealthier neighbor to the north and west. A decade later however, when Boston annexed nearby Somerville (then called Northborough), Malden came within its boundaries for municipal incorporation; this time it voted overwhelmingly in favor of becoming a city. Malden experienced significant growth during the years following its incorporation as a city: by 1800 it had outgrown its original village footprint and erected an impressive series of brick buildings near what is now Quincy Market Square; during the 19th century it grew even more rapidly through annexations by other municipalities including West Roxbury (1872), Everett (1890), Andover (1913) and Newton Centre (1978). In 1926 Mayor James Hickey approved plans to demolish much of downtown Malden to make way for development along Quincy Avenue which has continued uninterrupted ever since. Todayadays Malden is one of MA's fastest growing communities with over 20k residents currently living there!
