In 1735, a British Ordnance Survey map of the area showed that Malden was part of Boston. Massachusetts Bay Colony had been founded in 1629 and its first governor, John Winthrop, named the town after his friend, Sir Francis Theobald Mallet. The Mallets were one of the original investors in Harvard University. By 1735 Malden had a population of about seventy-five residents. One man who did not migrate to Massachusetts until after the Revolutionary War was Nicholas-Jacques L’Estrange (1712-1787), a French Huguenot who came to America in 1749 with his family and settled in Salem, MA. He became an important figure in early American settlement, purchasing land around present day Malden and serving as sheriff from 1757 to 1759 and again from 1768 to 1770. The first house on this site was built by Nicholas L’Estrange circa 1700. It is still standing today at 7 Main Street which is also the address of Malden’s oldest business: The Fox Tavern (founded c. 1700). Malden grew rapidly during the eighteenth century due largely to its strategic location within easy reach of other settlements on Long Island Sound and its position as one of the leading ports on New England's East Coast for goods brought overland by sea from Europe and Asia. After Grant’s death, Roosevelt moved back to New York City where he resumed his legal work until his death three years later at age 80 from a heart attack caused by overwork). This event led some residents to nickname their town “New Yorkeeland” after then-Governor Grover Cleveland – who also lived nearby – although it never gained more than 5% statewide population growth throughout its entire existence despite being listed as one of Cleveland’s five boroughs on numerous state ballots until recently (although it still falls within Suffolk County)).
