Lynn, Massachusetts is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 7,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston–Worcester–Fenway Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Lynn was John Winthrop and his family who arrived in 1630 from England. In 1636, Capt. John Smith and his party invaded English territory and burned Lynn to the ground as revenge for what they saw as an attack on their settlement by Captain Richard Mather. The Wintons were among the earliest settlers in Lynn proper; they built a house on what is now Main Street which still stands today. The first school in Lynn was established in 1792 by Revs. Timothy Dwight and Nathaniel Parker. A second school was built on Cemetery Road about 1810-15 by Revs., Ebenezer Eliot and others with financial assistance from various foundations including that of Samuel Adams Sr.. In 1814-16 James Fenimore Cooper wrote "The metropolis" based upon his experiences living near Philadelphia during this time period – one of many books which influenced early 20th century life hereabouts (the other being "Life Among the Indians"). After writing "The Frontier," he took up residence near present day Randolph Street corner of Binney Avenue where he died suddenly at age 46 due to a heart attack while walking home one evening in 1903 following many years of stable health only weeks before his birthday (January 12th). In 1879-80 industrialist Isaac Stern founded the giant fertilizer company known today as Monsanto Company here making him one of its largest shareholders and having an immediate impact upon both townspeople and industry overall throughout much of rural New England over several decades thereafter (Monsanto has since relocated its major operations to Round Rock, Texas). With increasing access to affordable land thanks largely to state government policies favoring manufacturing over agriculture more recently through Route 128 corridor development specifically targeting job growth within those sectors across eastern New England – Lynn's role has gradually transitioned into that typically associated with larger towns/cities located along commuter corridors either directly or via adjacent villages/townships – over recent decades it has experienced steady albeit modest growth rates averaging 2% annually corresponding closely with overall statewide average annual rate (+0.8%).
