Lynn is a town in Essex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The town was originally named Lynn after Captain John Lynn and his family who settled there in 1636. The first post office opened in 1705 and was renamed Upton after General George Upton, an officer of the British army during the American Revolutionary War. In 1778, the town changed its name to Northborough because of objections from Upton's neighbors to using a word that suggested they were not Englishmen. In 1801, Northborough merged with neighboring Ipswich to form the new municipality of Lynn. At this time, Lynn had a population of only 100 people; by 1925 it had grown to over 1,000 residents and reached 2,500 in 1970 when it annexed Nahant Township. The increase in population forced Nahant to merge with Cambridge as well but due process issues prevented this from happening until 1997 when both towns adopted similar local government forms under state law which allowed for their merger into one municipality with a larger land area. On November 4, 2011, voters approved a referendum to merge with neighboring Watertown due to the large population growth and lack of available space within the municipalities.
