The name of the town is derived from the English village of Lynn where most of its residents lived until 1827. In 1827 James Fenimore Cooper published "The Pioneers," which describe a group of men who had journeyed from New England to settle in this area in search of land and opportunity. These men were among the earliest settlers in what would become Lynn; many others followed shortly thereafter including such famous American authors and intellectuals as Nathaniel Hawthorne and John Jay Gould. In 1901 lynching took place here when three black men were found guilty after being accused of stealing cigars from a white man's cigar store. This event led to increased public attention to racial injustice throughout America and helped spur the passage of anti-lynching laws throughout most jurisdictions across America that followed. In 1946 local resident Ozzie Nelson founded − now called − Pemaquid Lake Marina Resort & Spa which remains one of only two owner operated marinas in New England with over 5 million passengers passing through it annually today!
