Lynn, Massachusetts is a town in Essex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 3,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. Lynn has been home to its beginnings as an English settlement in 1636 and as a small mill town for many years before becoming a major manufacturing center during the 20th century. The first permanent settler in what is now Lynn was Nicholas Beresford who arrived on December 12, 1636 with his family from London. Beresford's land grants were located along the current Main Street which he named after himself- "Nicholas Beresford's Way" or "Beresford Street". The first main business conducted in what is now Lynn was blacksmithing and wagonmaking because there were no other mills nearby that could do this type of work. By 1775, Lynn had become one of the largest towns in Essex County and had two churches: One Congregational (founded 1775) and one Baptist (founded 1786). In 1812, when Worcester County was created from parts of Essex and Middlesex Counties, Lynn became part of Worcester County too; however it reverted to Essex County again upon its merger into Suffolk County in 2002. In 1832, much to the chagrin of some residents who saw their community grow rapidly without proper development resources available to them,[1] Jens Jensen opened up his brickyard on present day Elm Street which became known as "Jensen's Yard". This helped start what would be an important agricultural tradition in Lynn- growing crops for local consumption rather than export or selling them off abroad. In 1835–1836, while still under construction by Jensen at his brickyard on Elm Street,[2] a new church called Trinity Methodist Episcopal Church was dedicated by Revd Samuel Adams[3] – developer and later state representative from Quincy – who also donated land for it on Park Square north of present day First Avenue.[4][5] The parish included areas south ofpresent day Route 5 between Central Square eastward down Southbridge Road past Present Day State University along Westfield Drive until reaching Fourth Ward; while eastward extending until Meetinghouse Hill near Cedar Pointe Reservoir[6][7]. Many families who lived around today's downtown core started arriving during this time period including those associated with John Athey’s paper business at Third and Broadway (now Science Center Boulevard).[8][9] During World War II most production took place outside the town limits due to wartime restrictions placed on factories within New England by President Franklin D Roosevelt through Executive Order 9066; however many businesses did open inside town limits like Sears,[10][11], Jens Jensen’s brickyard[12], Wilsons Hardware store[13], American Tobacco Company[14], Coca Cola Bottling Works Incorporated which produced soft drinks for General Motors Corporation[15]), Eastman Kodak Company which manufactured film products,[16], Bethlehem Steel company responsible for building tanks used by Allied forces during World War II such as Churchill Tanks(1944)[17],[18],[19],[20]) among others. After hostilities ended most companies closed up shop but some like Sears continued operations with slight alterations throughout the 1990s bringing back several decades old designs/products etc.; makinglynemontana one Of America's Most Storied Businesses
