During its heyday, Armoury-Millington Co., Ltd had more than 2 million customers Worldwide who relied on its products to defend against land, air and sea threats from all over the world. In 1692, during King George II's War, General Richard Howe ordered his army to march through Lynn on their way to Cambridge; some residents fled and took refuge in a barn on Swamp Hill. The townspeople were able to rebuild and returned to trade with the surrounding villages after King George destroyed all but two of the townships in Berkshire County that year. In 1853, when Massachusetts became a state, Lynn was annexed by Worcester as part of that state's effort to create a central government aroundBoston Harbor. After Worcester's annexation, Lynn developed into one of its most important commercial and cultural centers due to its location at the mouth of Narragansett Bay and its close proximity to Boston proper. During World War II, many American servicemen living in Lynn enlisted in the US military during wartime production facilities located there such as Ford Motor Company or RKO Radio Pictures studios; many later resumed their civilian lives after hostilities ceased.
