Lowell's history goes back to 1624 when the first European settlers arrived in what is now Plymouth County. The town was named for John Lowell, an Englishman who had come overland from England and settled in what is now Dartmouth, New Hampshire. In 1786, General George Washington visited Plymouth County and recommended that the county be split into two parts: one would be named for General Washington and the other for Captain John Eliot (the founder of Harvard University). This recommendation led to the creation of Quincy and Pittsfield counties in 1802. In 1853-54, during the American Civil War, much of Lowell sided with Confederate forces over Union forces. After the war ended and slavery was abolished in America by President Abraham Lincoln on April 12th 1865, Governor Oliver Butterfield proclaimed that "Lowell hath always been a loyal and patriotic community." From this point forward until 1975 when it became part of Springfield Township (now part of Worcester), Lowell continued to maintain its independent streak within Plymouth County despite having a combined population with either Quincy or Pittsfield counties In 1915-16 James Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti were serving time atoston prison on charges including murder while black while white people were being held without charge In December 2015 there was an attack against a Christmas party taking place in Lowell On December 5th 2015 three men entered the party wearing masks and perpetrated violence against innocent people before fleeing
