The Lowell Observatory was founded in 1795 by George Peake and his wife, Mary. The observatory was moved to its current location on Beacon Hill in 1846. The first telescope used at the Lowell Observatory was a refractor, which was built in 1802. In 1896, the National Academy of Sciences voted to create an astronomical division within what would later become NASA. President Theodore Roosevelt appointed astronomer Edward Munch as director of the Lowell Observatory. After Munch's death in 1909, James Tilton took over as director until his retirement in 1945. Under Tilton's leadership, the observatory became one of the most important research institutions for astronomy in America.
