Lowell, Massachusetts is a city of over 100,000 people on the banks of the Merrimack River. The city was founded in 1795 by Increase Mather and is home to two universities- Lowell Institute and the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. In 1825, a group of men from Lowell formed the rifle club which became known as “The Rifles”. The firstorganized shooting match in America took place here in 1826. In 1867, the town ratified a ordinance making it an open air market day. In 1865, a group of merchants from Lowell established what would become known as “The Merchants” Company. This company operated a grocery store and bakery until 1909 when it merged with The Atlantic Monthly Company to form The New England Publishing Company (NEP). NEP published many important books including Harper’s Magazine, Time Magazine, Dictionary Of American Biography and much more during this time period. One of their most famous products was their book series called Little Women which ran for 116 issues between 1896 and 1960. During World War II, Lowell played host to several military facilities including: Natick Arsenal (now part of Harvard University), Camp concentric (later Camp David), and Waltham Abbey Army Airfield which served as headquarters for Bomber Command during the war. On September 8th 1940, General Dwight D Eisenhower came here to sign Executive Order No 11905 which established Massachusets Defense Authority providing for local defense against potential Japanese aggression should Japan attempt to invade New England or any other area in our hemisphere! Additionally on this date there were also numerous other events taking place such as: Mayor John F Kennedy's inauguration ceremony; military formations meeting at Waltham Abbey Army Airfield; state fairgrounds; etc…. all these events helped contribute to the nickname “City Of Joy” because everyone seemed so happy during wartime! Since its establishment in 1795 by Increase Mather who named it after himself & his wife Sarah], Lowell has been home to many notable residents including Jepson Saltonstall who was one of America’s leading whaling captains during that period & author Nathaniel Hawthorne whose novel BarnabyRoper was set here; General David Irvine who commanded Allied forces within NATO during Operation Overlord; Samuel Eliot Morison who wrote about American History for textbooks throughout college level (& later won an Oscar for doing so); Vincent Price who starred in 5 movies based out of Boston Common (& 1 movie filmed HERE);& much more! Today, due largely to its location close to both universities & great shopping opportunities as well as its rich history, Lowell continuesto be an vibrant city with lots going on every day!
