Lowell is the largest town in Middlesex County and second-largest municipality by area after Boston. Lowell is part of the Boston metropolitan area. It lies on the east side of the Connecticut River and has a total area of 5 square miles (13 km²). Lowell was founded in 1636 as Eastborough by Puritan settlers from England who were seeking to avoid religious persecution in their homeland. In 1784, it became part of Salem Village. A smallpox pandemic that struck the town in 1847 caused many deaths, but also spawned a number of businesses and residential neighborhoods including North End (later Quincy), South End (later Roxbury), and Downtown (later mitochondria). The first post office was established in 1837. On October 15, 1892, Lowell's first synagogue opened its doors with Rabbi Isaac Marcus serving as its inaugural rabbi. After World War II, when Jews began moving to larger cities across America due to economic opportunities*, Lowell saw an increase in Zionist activity; this led to community buildings being erected throughout downtown Lowell such as Yeshiva Torah Congregation Beth El and Congregation Yehudah Hamodia which still stand today*. In 2006 – 2007 there was an effort spearheaded by then Mayor Joseph Curtatone* called "The Town Meeting Project" which aimed to improve public education through issues surrounding housing prices*, infrastructure* and quality of life* within the city limits; results include better transportation options available for residents *and* more access to parks and recreational amenities*. *On July 1st 2008 Mayor Curtatone announced he would not seek reelection so he could focus on his job as Deputy Mayor for Housing Development & Neighborhood Services

Lowell has been inhabited by humans for over 10,000 years and is one of the oldest towns in New England. The town was first settled by people from Great Britain in 1625. It became a part of the United States after its independence from Great Britain in 1776. In 1803, Lowell was chosen as the site for an important military installation called Fort Warren. The fort served as a base for American forces during the War of 1812 and also played an important role in later wars against Native Americans. In 1830, many high-ranking militaries gathered at Fort Warren to discuss ways to improve transportation between Boston and other parts of New England. This event is considered to be the beginning of modern day highway construction in Massachusetts. After several failed attempts, Fort Warren was finally completed in 1836 and became known as Castle Hill after Governor Jonathan Edwards’s home on nearby Mount freeman. In 1840, Colonel Ezra Stiles built a smallpox hospital in what is now downtown Lowell following his experiences helping quarantine British troops during the Napoleonic Wars. The hospital remained operational until 1862 when it was replaced by larger hospitals near present day Quincy University and Harvard University respectively.
