The first guns in Lowell were pistols. A group of men from the town met to buy pistols and started shooting them around December 1795. The first gun that was bought in Lowell was a 12-gauge shotgun. It was made by Captain John Greenough, an American Revolutionary War veteran and member of the town committee. In 1812, Captain Greenough built a rifle range on his property and began using it to shoot rabbits, squirrels, and other small animals. In 1816, he bought a shotgun from Nicholas Wigglesworth and continued using it for target practice at his rifle range.Around 1830, Captain Greenough's son John became captain of the town committee and decided to build a schoolhouse on land he had purchased from the Rev. Abraham Morse. The new schoolhouse was completed in 1831 and served as the first public school in Lowell. Around this time, also, some men set up a cooperage near where the now Central Library is located today. This cooperative operated until about 1850 when it burned down due to lack of maintenance.$5 worth of fresh meat could be sold at the cooperage during weekdays between September 1st and November 15th

In 1951, Lowell established itself as an independent municipality within Middlesex County with a population of over 30,000 people. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, many major inventions were made here at various companies including Northeastern Electric Telephone Company (Northeastern), NEC Corporation (manufacturer of electric meters), Ameritech (the forerunner of Comcast) and GEICO (the predecessor of GEICO Automotive). Additionally, manyiuses such as Winslow Homer worked here at these firms or started their careers here while still in school before moving on to greater things later on. All told there are more than 200 businesses located in or had a significant impact on Lowell through its history - something that makes this community truly unique among larger metropolitan areas across North America!
