The city's growth continued through World War II when manufacturing jobs left Leominster for munitions plants all over New England due to wartime production quotas set forth by President Franklin D Roosevelt following the attack on Pearl Harbor; however, many residents refused to leave their homes behind and formed groups such as "Leominster United" (later renamed "Take Back Our Town"), which campaigned for city rights within the larger community despite some opposition from Mayor John Hynes (term expired). Leominster, Massachusetts is a town in Suffolk County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 10,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. Leominster is first mentioned in 1636 as "Lingham" and by 1722 it had become an incorporated village. In 1802 Leominster became the seat of Suffolk County; its predecessor was Charlestown. The town's history can be traced back to 1636 when Englishman John Winthrop settled in what is now Leominster and began to build a Harvard college school which he called "Winthrop's School". Winthrop also founded the Congregational Church in 1642 and many other businesses including a millinery shop and post office followed soon after. In 1722, John Fane left England for America with his family on what would be known as the Mayflower Compact. On July 14th they landed at Plymouth Rock on Cape Cod and started their journey northward towards what would become Boston. After settlement of North America by Europeans, Leominster was one of the many towns annexed by Worcester County in 1802 following its creation from parts of Charlestown and Southborough counties. During World War II, much activity took place within Leominster centered around manufacturing during wartime production shortages that gripped New England throughout most of 1942-1945 due to lack of available resources elsewhere in the country during that time period. Many local residents joined the military or were drafted during those years including future Ulysses S Grant who attended high school here before going on to attend Wesleyan University where he earned his undergraduate degree in 1913 before becoming an ordained minister. Other notable natives who engaged in manufacturing during this time include Edwin Meese III (founder/CEO American Motors Corporation), George Romney (Governor of Massachusetts), Mayor James Michael Curley (mayor from 1969–1974) and Treasurer Albert Shanker (President Ford’s Budget Director). The GI Bill led to numerous young people coming outof homes at home into careers within their communities such as engineers, scientists and physicians which has had an impact on community morale ever since unlike today where jobs often require new graduates not already experienced professionals to continue working after leaving college or even entering professional careers early like many recent graduates are forced into today through no fault of their own but because there are few opportunities for them outside traditional job markets
