In 17th century Leominster, Massachusetts, a group of men decided to get into the optical business. They opened a store called The Optics Shop and began selling telescopes. Today's economy is based primarily on service businesses such as accounting firms and real estate companies. According to the 2010 US Census estimate,[2] the racial makeup of Leominster was 98% White (non-Hispanic) and 2% Black or African American.[3] As of 2000[4], there were only 9% Hispanic residents in town – about one third fewer than White residents overall but more than double what it had been prior to 2000[5]. There are no Mexican immigrants reported in town according to2010 US Census data although Mexicans have long been present in neighboring North Adams through work visas issued originally to their ancestors who came here between 1540-1600 when Massachusettes was founded as English colony

Leominster's history begins with Plymouth Colony's arrival in 1620 on Cape Cod. In 1764, when General William Howe established Springfield and Westborough as part of his conquest of England's America during the American Revolution, he chose to make Leominster his new headquarters for what would become Massachusetts Bay Colony - one of three original colonies that formed North America along with Rhode Island and Connecticut.* On July 1st 1825 Leominster became a city under charter from English authorities.* For centuries trade between the area now known as Leominster and other parts of New England took place through smuggling activities using cranes or vessels hidden among trees on Long Wharf* (*See History Lesson: “Plymouth colonists settle in towns throughout New England”). In recent years there has been some resurgence within the local business community due to weak economic conditions elsewhere in New England* (*See Businesses & Industries: “Leominster Still Struggling But Gaining Some respite”).
